We started life with an excellent Allen & Heath 24 Channel sound board. But as we were booking bigger and bigger acts we soon realized that we were outgrowing the Allen & Heath.
We needed more channels. Hell, we needed a lot more channels!
We found the perfect board for us in Hollywood. A used Yamaha PM4000 used by a high end mobile production studio that was going digital. For us, a high end old style analog board like the Yamaha PM4000 is perfect. They give exceptional clarity and are super dependable workhorses.
Our BIG YAMAHA has 34 Mono Inputs and 11 Stereo Inputs for a total of 45 Channels. And the 11 Stereo Inputs can be configured as 22 Mono Inputs for certain situations which is the functional equivalent of 54 channels.
Somewhere down the road we might outgrow this board. If so, our board is expandable to 61 inputs with little effort. We haven’t needed to expand it yet, but maybe we will one of these days!
The new digital boards are great, but if they go down, they go all the way down. With the analog boards, you might lose one channel, but the rest of the board will keep working until you fix that one channel. We love the power, range, sound quality and reliability of our Yamaha PM4000.
In all fairness, the new digital boards are much better for national act touring. The big old boards like ours are a nightmare to haul around on a tour! But it’s just right for a fixed installation like Club Red.
